Episode 2
Tessa arrived at the retro-themed bar, her excitement tempered with a hint of nervousness. She was looking forward to her date with Brad, but she couldn’t shake the lingering thoughts about Alex, whom she had seen briefly the week before. The idea of juggling her feelings for both men was already proving to be more complicated than she anticipated.
As she entered the bar, she glanced around at the colorful neon signs and the hum of lively conversation. It was a stark contrast to her previous, quieter dates. She took a deep breath, trying to shake off any nerves.
Brad was already there, waiting by one of the vintage pinball machines. He was dressed casually in a button-up shirt and jeans, a relaxed smile on his face as he waved her over.
“Hey, Tessa!” Brad called out. “Glad you could make it.”
“Hi, Brad!” Tessa replied, smiling back. “This place looks awesome. I’ve heard great things about the pinball machines.”
Brad’s smile widened. “I thought it’d be a fun change of pace. Let’s see if I can give you a run for your money.”
As they made their way to the pinball machine, Tessa couldn’t help but feel a flutter of excitement. This was supposed to be a fun evening, a break from the recent complexities of her dating life.
While Brad and Tessa were engrossed in their pinball game, the bar’s door swung open with a dramatic jingle. Emily, Brad’s ex, strode in confidently, her presence immediately drawing attention. She was dressed in a striking red dress that seemed out of place in the casual setting, and her loud, boisterous laughter cut through the ambient noise.
Brad’s face fell slightly as he noticed Emily, but he quickly masked his reaction with a forced smile.
“Is that… Emily?” Tessa asked, her curiosity piqued.
Brad nodded, looking uneasy. “Yeah, that’s Emily. I didn’t expect to see her here.”
Emily spotted Brad and Tessa and made a beeline for them, her friends trailing behind. She approached with an overly enthusiastic wave.
“Brad! What a surprise!” Emily exclaimed, her voice carrying across the room. She turned to Tessa with a bright, albeit somewhat strained, smile. “And you must be Tessa! I’ve heard so much about you.”
Tessa extended her hand, trying to remain polite despite her discomfort. “Nice to meet you, Emily.”
Emily took Tessa’s hand, giving it a firm shake. “I hope you’re enjoying the evening. Brad and I used to have such fun here. Remember those pinball tournaments, Brad?”
Brad shifted uncomfortably, his smile tightening. “Yeah, those were good times.”
Tessa tried to focus on the conversation, but Emily’s presence was impossible to ignore. The evening had started on a positive note, but now Tessa felt like she was caught in the middle of an awkward situation.
As Emily continued to dominate the conversation, recounting exaggerated stories of her and Brad’s past dates, Tessa found herself struggling to keep the conversation light. She exchanged glances with Brad, who looked increasingly uncomfortable.
At one point, Emily’s laughter grew louder, drawing more attention from the other patrons. She began to regale the group with an over-the-top story about a “hilarious” mishap from her and Brad’s last pinball game.
Brad glanced at Tessa, his expression a mix of apology and frustration. “I’m really sorry about this. I didn’t know Emily would show up.”
Tessa forced a smile, trying to salvage the evening. “It’s okay. Let’s just try to enjoy the night as best we can.”
Despite Tessa’s best efforts to stay engaged, the evening was becoming increasingly awkward. Emily, now seated at a nearby table with her friends, was continuing to narrate tales of her and Brad’s past dates in exaggerated detail. Brad and Tessa tried to focus on their game, but Emily’s loud laughter and frequent interruptions were hard to ignore.
Brad glanced at Tessa, trying to offer a reassuring smile. “Let’s see if we can reclaim some fun from this night. How about a little friendly competition on the pinball machine?”
Tessa nodded, grateful for a distraction. “Sounds good. I’m ready to show you my pinball skills.”
They moved to the pinball machine, and Tessa began her best attempts to rack up points. As they played, Brad seemed to loosen up, though his occasional glances towards Emily’s table indicated his unease.
Tessa was in the middle of a particularly intense round when Emily and her friends decided to migrate closer to the pinball area. Emily, now carrying a drink and a loud conversation, stood right next to them, her presence impossible to ignore.
“Oh, you’re playing pinball!” Emily exclaimed, leaning in with exaggerated enthusiasm. “Brad and I used to have these epic battles. I was always the reigning champion. Aren’t you going to miss playing with me, Brad?”
Brad’s face reddened slightly, and he forced a laugh. “Those were good times, Emily. But Tessa and I are having a great time, too.”
Tessa, trying to stay positive, joined in the conversation. “Well, I’m definitely not the reigning champion. I’ve been practicing, though.”
Emily’s attention shifted to Tessa, her tone somewhat condescending. “Oh, I’m sure you’re doing great. Brad always did have a thing for trying to impress his dates with games.”
Brad shifted his weight uncomfortably, clearly annoyed by Emily’s comments. “Emily, can we not? I really just want to enjoy this evening with Tessa.”
Emily’s expression faltered slightly, but she quickly masked it with a smirk. “Alright, alright. I’ll leave you two to your game. Just don’t let him win too easily, Tessa.”
As Emily walked away, Tessa could sense the relief in Brad’s demeanor. They resumed their game, the mood slightly lighter but still tinged with the earlier discomfort.
The pinball machine game was winding down, and Tessa was starting to feel more relaxed. Brad’s attempts to refocus on their game were proving successful, and they shared a few genuine laughs as they played.
“So,” Tessa said, trying to shift the conversation to something more personal, “what’s something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t had the chance to?”
Brad’s eyes lit up as he considered the question. “I’ve always wanted to go on a hot air balloon ride. It sounds like an incredible experience, but I haven’t had the chance yet. What about you?”
Tessa smiled, thinking about her own dreams. “I’ve always wanted to go on a spontaneous road trip. Just pack up and go wherever the road takes me.”
Their conversation continued in a more relaxed and engaging manner, and Tessa felt a renewed connection with Brad. However, the earlier tension with Emily lingered in the back of her mind.
As Tessa and Brad finished their pinball game, the bar’s atmosphere had shifted from lively to more subdued. Emily and her friends had moved to a different part of the bar, allowing Tessa and Brad a temporary respite from the awkwardness.
Brad let out a relieved sigh. “I’m glad that’s over. Thanks for sticking with it despite… well, everything.”
Tessa smiled, appreciating Brad’s attempt to salvage the evening. “No problem. It’s been an experience, for sure.”
They decided to grab a seat at a cozy booth in the lounge area of the bar. The soft lighting and quieter environment provided a welcome contrast to the earlier chaos. As they settled in, Tessa took a sip of her drink, hoping to steer the conversation in a more positive direction
Their conversation continued pleasantly for a while, focusing on lighter topics like their favorite movies and hobbies. Just as Tessa was beginning to relax, Emily and her friends reappeared, this time heading toward the bar’s exit.
Emily noticed Tessa and Brad and approached their table with a smirk. “Well, it looks like you two have made yourselves comfortable.”
Brad’s face tightened, but he maintained a polite tone. “Emily, we were just wrapping up. I hope you’re having a good time with your friends.”
Emily’s eyes flickered with mischief. “Oh, we’re having a blast. Just thought I’d say goodbye before heading out. I didn’t mean to intrude on your date.”
Tessa felt a twinge of irritation but managed to stay calm. “It was nice meeting you, Emily.”
Emily leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a more conspiratorial tone. “Brad’s always been a bit of a show-off. Just don’t let him make you think he’s a perfect gentleman. He has his quirks.”
Brad’s expression darkened, but he said nothing. Tessa, feeling the need to defuse the situation, tried to steer the conversation back to safer ground.
“Well, it’s been a long night,” Tessa said, forcing a smile. “We should probably call it a day.”
Emily gave them a final, knowing look before turning on her heel and walking away with her friends.
Outside the bar, Brad and Tessa walked towards Tessa’s car, the cool night air providing a refreshing contrast to the bar’s earlier warmth. The earlier discomfort had left a lingering tension, and Tessa could sense Brad’s frustration.
“I’m really sorry about Emily,” Brad said as they reached the car. “I didn’t expect her to be so… disruptive.”
Tessa sighed, her disappointment evident. “It was definitely an unexpected turn of events. I’m trying not to let it ruin the evening, but it’s hard not to feel a bit overshadowed.”
Brad looked genuinely remorseful. “I get it. I really do. I’d like to make it up to you. How about we plan something different next time, just the two of us?”
Tessa considered his offer, feeling a mix of emotions. “That sounds good. I’d like to have a proper date without any more surprises.”
Brad smiled, his expression softening. “Great. I’ll text you soon to set something up.”
Tessa nodded, feeling a bit more optimistic. “I’ll look forward to it.”
As Tessa drove away, she reflected on the evening’s events. Despite the awkwardness, there were moments of genuine connection with Brad. She hoped their next date would be less eventful and more enjoyable.
Tessa unlocked the door to her apartment, feeling a mix of relief and lingering frustration. She tossed her keys onto the kitchen counter and slumped onto the couch, her mind replaying the events of the evening. Despite Brad’s efforts to make the best of the situation, Emily’s presence had left a shadow over what was supposed to be a fun date.
Her phone buzzed with a message notification. It was from Jade.
Text from Jade: “Hey, how did the date go? Can’t wait to hear all about it!”
Tessa smiled despite herself and typed a quick reply.
Text from Tessa: “Hey! It was… eventful. Emily showed up and things got a bit awkward. Brad was nice about it, though. We’re planning another date.”
A few moments later, Jade’s response came through.
Text from Jade: “Oh no, Emily? That’s a plot twist! I’m sure Brad will make it up to you. Let’s catch up soon—I want all the details!”
Tessa chuckled and set her phone aside, making her way to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of wine, hoping it might help her unwind after the chaotic evening
Later, Tessa was curled up on her couch with a glass of wine, flipping through channels aimlessly. The doorbell rang, and she reluctantly got up to answer it, surprised to see Lena standing outside with a knowing smile.
“Hey, I thought I’d drop by,” Lena said, holding a small bag in her hand. “I heard about the date, and I came prepared.”
Tessa raised an eyebrow as Lena entered the apartment. “Prepared for what?”
Lena set the bag down on the coffee table and pulled out a box of chocolates and a couple of fun, quirky board games. “Thought you might need a pick-me-up and some company. Plus, I’m dying to hear the full story.”
Tessa laughed and invited Lena in. They settled on the couch, with the chocolates and games spread out between them.
“So, give me the scoop,” Lena said, grabbing a chocolate and looking expectantly at Tessa.
Tessa took a deep breath and began recounting the evening. She described Emily’s dramatic entrance, the pinball game, and the awkward encounters. Lena listened intently, occasionally interjecting with humorous comments and sympathetic remarks.
“And then,” Tessa finished, “Brad tried to make it up to me by suggesting another date. I’m hopeful that the next one will go better.”
Lena nodded, looking thoughtful. “It sounds like Brad really wants to make things work despite the hiccups. It’s a good sign. Plus, you handled the situation like a pro.”
Tessa smiled, appreciating Lena’s support. “Thanks. I’m trying to stay positive. It’s just… tricky balancing everything with Alex still in the picture.”
Lena’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Ah, the infamous Alex. You’ve got quite the dating dilemma on your hands. But you’ll figure it out. In the meantime, let’s focus on having some fun tonight.”
They spent the rest of the evening playing games, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. As the night wore on, Tessa felt her spirits lift, grateful for Lena’s support and the distraction from her dating woes.
Tessa woke up feeling slightly better, thanks to Lena’s visit the night before. She had spent the morning organizing her closet and catching up on some personal projects. As she was about to grab a late lunch, there was a knock on her door. She wasn’t expecting anyone, so she was surprised to find Alex standing there with a warm smile and a box of gourmet pastries.
“Hey, Tessa!” Alex greeted her, his eyes lighting up as he saw her. “I thought I’d drop by and bring you some treats. I heard about your date last night, and I figured you might need a pick-me-up.”
Tessa smiled, feeling a surge of warmth at the sight of him. “Alex, hi! That’s so thoughtful of you. Come on in.”
She opened the door wider to let him in, and Alex followed her into the cozy living room. He set the box of pastries on the coffee table and took a seat on the couch. Tessa joined him, feeling a mix of anticipation and curiosity.
“So, how was the date?” Alex asked, his tone casual but with an underlying note of concern. “Lena mentioned it didn’t go as smoothly as you’d hoped.”
Tessa chuckled softly, shaking her head. “That’s one way to put it. Emily, Brad’s ex, showed up and made things pretty awkward. But Brad and I tried to make the best of it. We’re planning another date.”
Alex’s eyes flickered with something unreadable, but he kept his expression neutral. “I’m sorry to hear that. It sounds like it was a bit of a rollercoaster. But Brad’s a good guy, right? I’m sure he’ll make it up to you.”
Tessa nodded, appreciating his support. “Yeah, I think so. I’m hopeful about the next date. It’s just been a lot to process.”
As they continued chatting, Tessa noticed how Alex’s gaze seemed to linger on her. They had been friends for a long time, and she had always appreciated his presence in her life. But there was something different today—an unspoken tension that she couldn’t quite place.
“So,” Tessa said, trying to lighten the mood, “what’s new with you? Any exciting plans or projects?”
Alex smiled, though there was a hint of hesitation in his eyes. “Actually, I’ve been thinking about taking a short trip to clear my head. It’s been a busy few weeks, and I could use a change of scenery.”
Tessa’s interest was piqued. “That sounds like a great idea. Sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what you need.”
As they talked about Alex’s potential trip, the conversation flowed easily. Tessa couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of comfort and connection with Alex. His presence was reassuring, and their shared history added a layer of depth to their interactions.
The doorbell rang, interrupting their conversation. Tessa went to answer it and found Lena standing outside, looking both curious and amused.
“Hey, I thought I’d come by and check in on you,” Lena said, her eyes darting to Alex with a playful glint. “Looks like you’ve got some company.”
Alex stood up, extending his hand to Lena with a friendly smile. “Hi, Lena. Good to see you.”
Lena shook his hand and then turned to Tessa with a knowing smile. “I see you’re well taken care of.”
Tessa raised an eyebrow, curious about Lena’s tone. “What do you mean?”
Lena winked. “Oh, nothing. Just that you’ve got quite a good friend here.”
As Lena joined them in the living room, the atmosphere became more relaxed. They chatted and laughed together, and Alex seemed to fit in seamlessly with Tessa’s circle of friends. Lena’s presence added a lighthearted touch to the afternoon, and Tessa found herself enjoying the company of both Alex and Lena.
When the time came for Alex to leave, he gave Tessa a warm hug and a sincere smile. “I’m glad we had this chance to catch up. I hope things get better with Brad.”
Tessa hugged him back, feeling a flutter of emotions. “Thanks, Alex. I really appreciate the support.”
As Alex walked out the door, Lena turned to Tessa with a thoughtful expression. “You know, Alex has always been a great friend. But there’s something more there, don’t you think?”
Tessa’s heart skipped a beat at Lena’s words. “What do you mean?”
Lena smiled knowingly. “I think he’s been carrying a torch for you for a while. Just something to think about.”
As Lena left, Tessa sat on the couch, her mind swirling with new thoughts. Alex’s visit had been comforting, but Lena’s comment had opened up a new perspective on their relationship. She felt a mix of confusion and curiosity, wondering about the possibilities that lay ahead.
Tessa spent the rest of the day reflecting on her conversations with Alex and Lena. The lingering thoughts about Alex’s feelings added a new layer of complexity to her situation. She decided to distract herself by preparing a light dinner and catching up on some work.
As she was finishing up in the kitchen, her phone buzzed with a call. She glanced at the screen and saw it was Brad. With a mix of curiosity and apprehension, she answered.
“Hey, Brad!” Tessa greeted, trying to sound cheerful. “What’s up?”
“Hey, Tessa,” Brad’s voice came through, sounding warm but a bit hesitant. “I was hoping we could talk about our next date. I want to make sure it’s something you’ll really enjoy.”
Tessa smiled, feeling a bit more at ease. “That sounds great. I’m looking forward to it. Do you have any ideas in mind?”
Brad’s tone brightened. “I was thinking of doing something a bit more laid-back this time. Maybe a picnic in the park or a visit to a local art gallery. What do you think?”
Tessa considered the options. “Both sound wonderful. I’m up for either one. Let’s just pick something that feels right in the moment.”
Brad laughed softly. “Perfect. I’ll plan something and let you know the details. I really want this to be a good experience for both of us.”
As they wrapped up their conversation, Tessa felt a renewed sense of hope about her relationship with Brad. It was clear he was making an effort to address the previous hiccups.
After ending the call with Brad, Tessa relaxed on her couch, feeling more optimistic. She decided to take a break and watch a movie to unwind. Just as she was about to press play, her phone buzzed with a new message.
It was from Alex.
Text from Alex: “Hey, hope you’re doing well. I was thinking of grabbing coffee tomorrow morning. Interested?”
Tessa’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected to hear from Alex so soon, but the idea of meeting up for coffee was appealing. She typed a quick response.
Text from Tessa: “Hi! Coffee sounds great. What time were you thinking?”
Text from Alex: “How about 10 AM? I know a great café nearby.”
Text from Tessa: “10 AM works for me. Looking forward to it!”
The next morning, Tessa arrived at the café, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness. She spotted Alex at a corner table, already waiting with two cups of coffee.
“Hey, Alex!” Tessa greeted, her smile genuine as she approached him.
“Hey, Tessa,” Alex said, standing up to greet her. “I’m glad you could make it.”
They settled into their seats, and Alex handed Tessa her coffee. The warm aroma and cozy atmosphere of the café made for a pleasant setting.
“So, how’s everything going?” Alex asked, taking a sip of his coffee. “Any updates on the Brad situation?”
Tessa took a sip of her coffee, feeling relaxed. “Yeah, actually, we’ve been planning another date. We’re thinking of doing something more laid-back this time, like a picnic or visiting an art gallery.”
Alex nodded, a thoughtful expression on his face. “That sounds nice. I’m sure it’ll be a great time. And how are you feeling about everything?”
Tessa sighed, appreciating Alex’s genuine concern. “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I’m hopeful. I just can’t help but feel conflicted about everything. With Brad’s unexpected reappearance and our evolving dynamic, it’s all a bit overwhelming.”
Alex nodded, understanding her struggle. “I get that. It’s a lot to handle, especially when emotions are involved. I just want you to be sure about what you want.”
Tessa felt a flutter of emotions at his words. She had always valued Alex’s friendship, but the conversation was stirring up deeper feelings.
As they finished their coffee and prepared to leave, Alex walked Tessa to her car. There was a moment of silence as they stood by the vehicle, the air filled with unspoken words.
“Thanks for the coffee, Alex,” Tessa said, her voice soft. “I appreciate you checking in.”
Alex smiled, his eyes reflecting a mixture of warmth and sadness. “Anytime, Tessa. If you ever need to talk or just hang out, I’m here.”
Tessa nodded, feeling a pang of regret. “I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for everything.”
As Alex walked away, Tessa sat in her car, her thoughts swirling. The morning had been both comforting and confusing, and she knew she had some decisions to make about her feelings for both Alex and Brad.
